The Louisville Journal is responsible for this :—When Barnum’s cannibals offered one of the spectators at the show last night t; n dollars if he would give him his little boy on a half shell for breakfast this morning, “My little boy is hot for sale,” replied the fond parent,” but I have got a stall-fed mother-in-law you can have for half the money.”
After an inspection made by a mjmbey of friends short time back, of the “ humble farmer home” of Mr Greeley, Little Chappaqua, the guests sat down to a luncheon, spread in “the Evergreens,” consisting of lobster salads; baked beans, potted }>igeon, fish, fruit, vegetables, ice cream, einonade, &c., all of which, they were assured by a negro whs acted as major dorao, *‘had been growed on the farm.” This rather startled a gentleman present, who inquired as to the lobsters. He was at once informed by the negro that “dey gro\ved ia do brook. 1
Putting it Delicately : A story is afloat which shows that his Fijian majesty, Cako--1., has clear and distinct ideas on the subject of traile and barter. A few weeks back a gentleman from this Colony on a visit, half of pleasure and half of business, to Fiji, bad occasion to requ re more shippng accommodation than was avai'ablc Urged on by some friend, ho requested an audience of the King and asked for the loan of the royal yacht. His Majesty received the request graciously, and even promised the boon asked for • I ut as the grateful visitor was retiring with a bow, his astute Majesty observed with a look of indescribable knowingness, that gentlemen who went fishing were usually in the habit of taking care that they had an attractive bait on the hook, A more delicate way of hinting that the royal navy would not object to a subsidy has rarely been given.
