The second day’s races were held to-day. The weather 1 was hot, and the attendance better than yesterday. The Grand Stand Handicap was won by Hatred, Atlas being second, and Malice third; the Scurry Stakes by Madaln, Golden Cloud being seednd, The Town Plate was a walk-over'for Tarabourini. The Hack Race was won by Golden Cloud, Wexford being second; and the Consolation by Burgundy, Dragon being second.

Proudfoot and Co.’s tender for the Hutt railway was rejected as informal, and the tender of 0, M ‘Kirby, of Wellington, at L 19,970, accepted. The charge of rape preferred against Stewart, late warder at the Lunatic Asylum, has been dismissed, it being impassible to prove the non-consent of ‘ the female Itinatic.
Wanganui, February 7A newspaper is projected at Merton, vjrifch a capital of L‘2,000 in 20s scares.’ ! Several horses have arrived for the rases next week.

Chairiui’a circus opened to 1,500 people, a special train being arranged to allow country people to attend.
