Again a large number of people failed to obtain admission to Madame Cora’s entertainment at the Masonic Hall last evening. The various feal a of legerdemain were received with demonstrations of approval, and at the close of the performance gifts were distributed as usual. Another afternoon performance is to be given to-morrow*.

At a meeting of the Southland Acclimatisation Society, held last week, it was stated that information bad been received from Dr Hector to the effect that a shipment'of salmon ova was to be made from the Clyde on or about the 20th of December last; and that arrangements hj id been made at the ponds for hatching out 100,000 ova. As the ova may be expected to arrive in Dunedin in Ma ch, the hon. secretary was authorised to make the necessary provision, at a cpst not exceeding 1 20, for its spe.;dy Wansfer to the ponds at Wallacetown. The' hon. secretary tnehtiohed that he had received a letter from tho'Colouial Secretary, which stated that Mr Howard was to have the sole charge of the ova. The regular monthly meeting of the Dunedin Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening at the engine station ; Captain Wain in the chair. Excuses were read and received, and the resignation of Mr F. Robertson accepted. The following letter was read from the Town Clerk s—“ Sir, —T have the honor, by direction of the Council, to inform you tWftoeatty thi Council hj« bid under

The Council is of opinion that the time has ,airived when the regulation on this head may, with public advantage, be amended ; and at its last me ting dtciL <1 that in future the amounts so payable shad be proportionate to merit and to the time during which the horses may be em loyed ; such amounts to be in the recommendation of the captain of the Brigade, and in ho case to exceed two pounds, but as much less than that sum as the captain may consider a reason able charge. Ihe Council trusts this alteration will be satisfactory to the Brigade.” A very warm discussion ensued, and the following proposition was carried :—“ 1 hat the Brigade decline to entertain the terms contained in their letter, it being an infringement of the agreement entered into between the Brigade and tie City Council.” Mr Hudson was re-elected an hon. member for the ensuing twelve months. He presented a volume of the life of < harles Dickens to the Brigade Library, which was received with thanks. Mr Carroll was also elected an honorary member, A letter, addressed to Captain Wain, was received from Mr Carroll, enclosing a cheque for L2 2s, and requesting that the same be given to Foreman Aarons, for his brave conduct on the morning of the fire in Ge rge street, Mr Aarons begged to thank Mr Carroll through Capt Wain, for his kindness, and would, with the consent of the Brigade, place it to the credit of the Sick and Accident Fund, Mr Krull was elected a working member, after which the roll was called.
