SATURDAY'S NEWS.
The “Comedy of Errors” drew a good house on Saturday evening, when it was played for the last time. To-night, the sensational drama of “ Snare ” will be played.
Close upon eleven hundred children attended Madame Cora’s entertainment on Saturday afternoon, and numbers of young hopefuls had to go home disappointed. The female magician also succeeded in drawing a crowded house in the evening.
We have received “The Evangelist” for February. It contains an article on “ Railway traffic on the Sabbath,” giving nothing worthy of comment; “The Results of the Synod Meeting “In Memoriatn,” a short biographical sketch of the late Rev. John Williams ; a controversial article, a Melbourne Tetter, a report of the Synod, and some general news.
John Meehan, laborer, was received into the gaol yesterday forenoon, escorted by Police Constable Boper. He was sentenced at Oamaru, on the 27th ultimo, by Mr Parker, R.M., to six mouths’ imprisonment with hard labor, for assaulting Amelia White, on the 20tb ultimo, at Papakaio, Contrary to section 40, of the “Offences against the Person Act, 1867,” it appearing to the Magistrate that the assault was of such a nature that it could not be sufficiently punished under the provisions contained in the 3Dth section of the same Act.
The proprietors of the Opera Company, in order to give everyone in the community an opportunity of hearing good music, have still further reduced the prices of admission. On Tiiesday, “ Lucia di Lamraermoor ” will be produced, with Signora Coy, the people’s favorite, in the principal character. The enterprise of the proprietors should be rewarded by a full house.
