(From the New Zealand Press Association.) Auckland, January 29. The Hero sailed to-day with 37,700 ozs. of gold. A deputation interviewed the Hon. Mr Richardson, and urged the making of the Thames and Waikato Railway, t'e promised to have a Hying survey made if the Native Department would guarantee no opposition, but would not risk the surveyors’ lives if the Natives opposed. There was beautiful weather for the Regatta. The Trading Vessels’ Silver Cup was won by the Undiue ; the Sailing Boats’ Cup by the Energy ; the Yachts’ Race by the Bismarck ; the Open Boats’ Race by the Nipper ; the Four-oared Race by the Wonder. Invercargill, January 29. The Mayor opened the new Grammar School to-day, in the presence of a large audience. There are 190 pupils on the roll. Lyttelton, January 29. The Mayor has called a meeting for Friday to consider the advisability of sending a crew to the Interprovincial Regatta at Wellington.
