This gentleman, who is both a shrewd politician and a progressive statesman, is well-known in California as the former Postmaster-General of New Zealand, in which capacity he made the contract which led to the establishment of unerioan steam service with Australasia, visiting the United States partly in connection with this business, Heis a warm friend •f commercial intercourse with this country, md his retura to power is very favorable to che intercourse already begun by means of Webb's steamships.
