THE VOLUNTEERS.
The Dunedin Artillery, Dunedin Naval, Scottish, North Dunedin, and Portobello Rifles, and Battalion Band and Staff fired the second stage this morning—400, 500, and 600 yards. The weather was clear and fine ; at the 600 yards the wind was strong from the left rear.
The first competition of the Waikari Rangers, for the Challenge Cup presented to the company by Captain Flexman, took place this morning, when Volunteer A. Frazer became the winner, with the good total score of 60 points. The weather was favourable for good shooting, being clear and calm. The conditions are—Ranges 2 0, 400, and 600 yards, five shots at each range ; position : standing at 200, any at 400 and 600 ; ta r gets : Wimbledon, throughout. The cup will be fired for once a month during the shooting season, and must be won seven times before becoming the property of the winner. The scores are as follows :

Queenstown, January 25,
Mr Maegregor, solicitor, died of apoplexy. His funeral was largely attended. Judge iiray and all the members of the profession were present. The District Court has been sitting during the week. The business «s not yet over. Harvesting operations are going on everywhere. The crops are light, and hands, of course, are scarce. The Chinese ate preparing for a grand New Vear’s reception. They invite Europeans to be present. The Mining Associations appear to see that they must assume some political action.
Bluff, January 25,
The Rangitoto has arrived from Dunedin, and sails for Melbourne at three o’clock today. The Stormbird has sailed for 1 Junedin. Several American whalers are cruising to the west of Foveaux Straits, and all are doing well. The Cal'ao, during a gale, had to cut from a sperm whale, wh.ch has since been washed ashore near Pahi. Auckland, January 24. A deputation, consisting of the Hon. Mr Williamson, Messrs Newman, Gibbons. Macfarlane, Isaacs, Aitken, and others, had an interview with the Superintendent to-day, and nrged him to promote the navigation of the Waikato, a,rail way from the Thames to Waikato, the extension of the Kaipara lino to Auckland, increased immigration, and other subjects. They expressed a belief that the delay in the execution of public works in the Province, and the entire break-down of immigration was entirely owing to the Superintendent’s action. The Superintendent replied that the fault was with the Colonial, and not the Provincial Government, and that he had urged the matters referred to on the Minister for Public Works ; that the ua-viga'-ion of the Waikato was bring improved, the Kaipara Railway extension being surveyed, and that he had endorsed the > rovincial Council’s recommendation of a railway from the Thames to Waikato. The correspondence on the subject is to be published to morrow.
The Rev. Mr Porter re-delivers his Martin’s Bay lecture to night. Collections for the Relief Fund are coming in. Eight Auckland Volunters have qualified as representatives at the Colonial rifle tiring.

The homestead of James Collins, at Pa* tangata, has been burned. The estimated loss is L6OO, and he is uninsured.

Christchurch, January 24. A satisfactory’meet'ng to-k place of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Thejje was a large attendance of shareholders, and the following were elected directors:— Messrs G. Gould, R. H. Rhodes, J. L. Coster, J. T. Peacock, R. Cobb, J. Ander* son, and W. Reeves.
