COWARDLY ASSAULT.
To the Editor.
Sir,— While strolling through the city last evening, I was much surprised to hear an affair talked about, which, if true, should not? be hushed up or allowed to go nnpunished. It appears that, while the Rev. Father Donovan was retnrning from the house of some of his congregation, where he had been administering the solemn duties of his office, three “gentlem n” were coming down the street immediately behind him, when one of them—a Government official, with the consent of the others—resolved to have a “lark” with the rev, gentleman. Accordingly, on coming alongside of him, he threw himself against the priest in a most violent manner. I have heard that an apology has been asked for ; whether it has been given or not 1 am not aware, but I trust that no such compromise of so serious a matter will be made, in justice not only to Father Donovan and the Catholic people of Dunedin, but also to the general public. I hold that these cowardly and half-drunken frolics should not go unpunished —I am, Ac., A Lover of Order.
