Wellington, January 21. Blanche left Hobart Town on the 14tb. She leaves for Auckland to-morrow to relieve the Dido on this station. The Dido goes to Sydney. The Rosario will probably relieve the Blanche shortly. Both the Independent and the Ecenhifl Post complain of political articles being inserted in the Waha Maori newspaper. ' January 22. The weather is beautiful for the anniversary regatta t;-:lay. A journeyman cabinetmaker, named I 1 ranK Dillon, committed suicide last night by cutting his throat with a chisel.
London, January 7. The Secretary of the St. Petersburg Embassy in London is conferring with' the Foreign ( fficc on the Turkistan questions. The relations between France and the Vatican continue un atisfactory. The Anglo French commercial treaty has been settled, subject to the ratification of Parliament. January 9. Louis Napoleon, ex-Emperor of the trench, died to day, after undergoing the operation of lithotomy. The Bradford Chamber of Commerce have reported favorably on Australian wools, and measures have been adopted to destroy burr in wool. The Suez mail was a week late in leaving Galle for Melbourne, owing to a breakdown. The Customs difficulties between France and Germany continue. The French Assembly are discussing a Bill to establish a Council of Education. Marshal Bazaine’s trial is postponed till after the Germans evacuate France, Australian news is unimportant, Auckland, January ‘2l. The Supcvintendental election excites great interest; Messrs Williamson, Sheehan, Lusk, Boylan, Mackvy, and Philip?, are mentioned as probable candidates. The Maungatautari meeting has been postponed to Friday. Sailed—Agnes Muir, for Bluff. Eeeeton, January 21. A great thunder storm has occurred at Lyell. Cullen’s store and Campbell’s billiard saloon were blown down.
