This is an in England, where the demand for coal ii exceeding the supply to an alarming extent/ rendering the price so high that it can id be borne by the poor, and is pressing hardly upon the manufacturing interests. Herein New Zealand, our large deposits-of coal are scarcely touched upon at present; and it wnl be many a long year, if ever, before New Zealand colonists will have to try expen. ments to ascertain what can be dona chalk, as a substitute for coal.
