Croucher, master of the cutter Glimpse, fell overboard at Wharema and was drowned. The rifle match, Wellington Volunteers v. the Napier Hide Club, resulted as follows : Wellington, 619 ; Napier, 614. December 14.

The General Government is going to construct a large reservoir and water-race at Waimea, Westland, at a cost of L 45,000. Instructions have been given to commence the works immediately.

Wiremu Hikaroa and Wiremu To Wheoro have accepted offices as commissioners for the Hawke's Bay land purchase enquiry, and leave Auckland the first opportunity. A strong hostile feeling is growing against the 20a household educational rate. The papers are filled with letters in reference to it. A monster meeting is projected. In view of the hostile feeling of the people, gentlemen appointed collectors under the Act have declined to act.

Napier, January 13,

The cutter Margaret, owned by Mr Robinson, of Napier, was seen bottom upwards in Tolago Bay. All hands are supposed to be lost.

Hokitika, January 13,

The Luna passed to-day. Two persons landed in a boat. The Luna grounded in Milford Sound, The vessel was lightened and got off undamaged after two days’ delay.

Bluff, January 14,

The Tararua arrived from Dunedin this morning, and sails for Melbourne at three to-day.
