She is bound to Newcastle for a load of coals for Callao. _ The topsail schooner Jane Anderson, which has been lying in Carey’s Bay, undergoing a few repairs, sailed out this morning. She is bound to Riverton. The Ironside, loading at the Bluff, has now 1800 bales of wool, 250 tons of preserved meats, 50 tons tallow on board, and is expected to complete loading the balance of her cargo and sail about the end of this month. The Wallabi came in this morning from the Bluff, at 10 a.m. Captain Leys reports leaving there at 6 p.in. on the with light S E* winds; passed a schooner, which he took for the Mabel Jane, abreast of Waipapa Point; passed the Nuggets at 1 a. in. on the Bth, with a fresh S.E. breeze; passed the Storm Bird and Pretty Jane off Green Island; steamed up Port Chalmers as above; landed mails and one passenger, and proceeded to town. We have to thank Cant iin Leys for our Southland files. The Colonial Government’s ps. Luna, Commander Fairchild, left Port Chalmers at 5 p.in. on the 30th ult., with Dr. Hector, Capt. Edwin, and other gentlemen, for the purpose of exit mining certain coal deposits at Waikawaand Preservation Inlet, Dr Hector was landed at loi Tois, and the Luna proceeded on to the Bluff, stopping to survey the coast off Waipapapa Point. The b.s. Aldinga some years ago, struck there on a rock, supposed to be about three miles off the land, and other vessels have also reported dangerous rocks off the Point. Night coming on, time did not permit the Luna to survey within two miles of the shore, but even at that distance from the land, the bottom was founcl to be very uneven, Uio l««wl «vt some easts giving twenty fathoms, and at the next only three Vessels should therefore give Waipapapa a wide berth. —Southland Times.
