(From the New Zealand Press Association.) Wellington, January 6. The Nelson and Foxhill Railway will be submitted to public tender shortly, without being first offered to the Messrs Brogden. January 7. At a large meeting of early settlers yesterday, it was resolved to form an early Colonists! Association, to be open to all who arrived from the date of Col. Wakefield’s arrival 17th August, 1831), to Kdwaid Gibbon Wakefield's arrival on the 3rd February, 1853. The objects of the Association to be the collecting, recording, and publishing of all interesting historic incidents and dates connected with the early settlement of the Colony; to perpetuate a kindly feeling among the pioneer settlers by arranging periodical meetings ; and to assist early settlers in distressed circumstances. Subscriptions to be not less than ss, and life membership LlO. Bir George Grey is to he requested to be president, and the following vice presidents :—Ex-Governor Eyre, Bi-hop Sehvyn -ir William Martin, Mr Fitzherbert, Dr Featherstone, Sir Chas. Clifford, Governor Weld, Sir R. Hanson, the Hon. Mr Petrie, Mr C. W. Ligar. Mr Wm. Spain, Judge r hapman, Major Durie, Mr Fox, Mr Stafford, Mr Hunter (treasurer), Mr Howard, and Mr Wallace (secretary). It is proposed to celebrate the inauguration of the Association by a dinner, to bo held on the anniversary of the Province. In the Supreme Court yesterday, Wm. Thomas, for indecent assault on a little girl, was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment and twenty-five lashes. The formation of the New Zealand Steel and Iron Company is progressing favorably. Shares are being well taken up, and influential names placed on the directory.
Christchurch, January 6. The Supreme Court opened to-day. There were ten cases set down for trial. The opera season closed ou Saturday. The company proceed to Dunedin. Auckland, January 6. Chiarioi’s circus opened on Saturday. There were cOOO persons present. The performance exceeds anything previously seen in this Colony. The quartz from Ohinemuri crushed one ounce to the ton. An agitation has been raised at the Thames to open Ohinemuri for the purpose of prospecting the locality. The Golden Crown claim is improving. The Nevada sailed yesterday. The Japanese Troupe are passengers by her. Napier, January 6. Ttye Provincial Government opened 8100 acre? of land between Tuki-Tuki and Makare-tu rivers for sale on deferred payments. weather is boisterous. Rain is falling ljesyily f aqd is much required.
