HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE.

To the Editor. Sik, —I see by your report of the speech made by Mr Proudfoot at the luncheon given by the promoters of the Dunedin and Port Chalmers II ail way, on the occasion of the formal opening of the line, that he gives his co.dial thanks to Mr Simpson and Mr George Proudfoot for their valuable engineering assistance. jNow, sir, to my own knowledge there is one who, although a native of the Province and born in Dunedin, yet deserves a little credit for his energetic perseverance. The survey of the line was executed and the works commenced by Mr Simpson; but if I understand correctly, Mr Geo. Duncan, junr., has carried ou the engineering works single-handed for the last eighteen months, and duriug this time the tunnels were commenced and completed, which I consider must have required no small amount of skill. Being myself one of Otago’s youths who iutend to push their way in the Province, I cannot but feel greatly disappointed at such au apparent slight ou one whom, I am sure, has striven to successfully carry on and complete the work which was entrusted to him. —I am, &c., An Otago Youth. [T.S.—We regret the name of Mr Duncan should have been omitted, for we understand that Mr JXProudfoot acknowledged 1 tbe

value of his services as well as those of Mr Simpsou. The omissionis due to the same cause as prevented our reporting the speech of the Hon. Sir F. D. Bell, our reporter was seated in a part of the ball where distinct hearing was impossible.— Ed. E. s.]
