Kaiapoi won the champion four oared race, the Avon Club being second and the Heathcote Club third. A man named Hichard Bean was out for a sail in a boat with Lis three children, when it capsized. The youngest child, aged seven years, was drowned. Hokitika, December 27. The Exhibition was successfully opened yesterday. Judge Harvey delivered the inaugural address. The National Anthem was sung by those present, accompanied by the Yolunt’oer band. Congratulatory messages were forwarded to the Governor and others. The Town Hall was crowded. LATEST FROM FIJI. Fiji advices to the 27th November report that the annexation movement is spreading, but that the present office-holders are exerting their influence against it. A disturbance was threatened at some of the outlying islands, which the Government had despatched a steamer with a native force to quell. The schooner Kate Grant had been wrecked off the coast of Fiji. The owner, named Boss, builder, of Levuka, had previously been killed by the Drummond islanders.
