The timber imported by Mr Brogden from Invercargill for fencing the Hntt railway is etaid to he of very inferior quality, and it is thought likely to be condemned. Three hundred and two immigraiPs, inclusive of children, are all the immigrants introduced into Wellington during the last twelve months. GiinrsTcinjucH, Deo.omb.or G, The Provip'jjal Council' last night decided that, In consequence of the increased population, a scheme be prepared for dealing with the drainage and sanitary control of the country districts in a comprehensive manner, with the object of throwing the responsibility on the landowners ; and that the General Government be requested to introduce a General Drainage Act next session. It was also resolved, by 'hi to 10. that 1 in districts containing 25 children between six and thirteen years it is expedient that educational districts be formed. All grants to denominational schools in such districts will therefore be stopped, in order to force the people to establish educational districts. The Council has made considerable progress with the estimates. All the votes for the establishment of colleges and training schools have been passed. LSOO was voted for a time ball at Lyttelton; L 250 for the first manufacture of fire bricks, glazed pipes,
and tiles, to the value of L 2000; and L 250 for the manufacture of Portland cement on the same conditions. Mr Knight’s motion for the appropriation of L2O,(K)U for immigration was furtuer adjourned to Tuesday. The grain market is alaiost at a standstill. Pour is Jinn at Ll4; and oats in good demand at 2s 4d. The long continued draught is damaging the crops. Cheese is at 5d ; and butter plentiful at the same figure. Lawk: >ck, December 6.
