Mr Walters writes to the Southern Gross, relative to the disqualification of Peeress. He says it was well known that Peeress was for sale ; several persons offered to purchase her, but believing his horse had a good chance he purchased Peeress, intending to to run Yattcrina for the Cup, and keep Peeress for the Handicap ; he at once scratched Peeress, thus saving anyone from losing on her. He says she could not have won the cup, and her admirers must have lost on her if she ran. He attributes her qualification to jealousy on the part of the Canterbury owners! He says he has owned racehorses for ten years, and always acted fairly—running to win. The new Education Ordinance which proposes a household tax of 20s in addition to the children’s capitation tax, has pissed through Committee Bn tf, December 5. Sailed—Jessie, for Dunedin. December G.
