Police. — Sergt. T. Meredith Smith, lately stationed at Queenstown, has been promoted to the rank of Sergt -Major. Court ue Appeal.—ln tlio Court of Appeal at Wellington, the judgment of bis Honor Judge Chapman in the case of Coneys v. Weldon, has been confirmed.

Sporting.— The programme ot the Lake District Races—to bo held on iho JOih and 17th January, 1873—has been issued. It comprises the undermentioned events, viz. :—Maiden Plate, L3O ; Grand otand Handicap, L6O ; Wakatip Handicap, L4O; Hack Selling Race, L‘2o; Handicap Hurdle Race, L3O ; Hack Hurdle Race, L 25 ; Queenstown Handicap, L 8 0; Publicans Purse, L3O ; Handicap Trotting Baco, L2O ; Consolation Handicap, L2O. Ihe total value of stakes offered is L 375. The Hacks.— The first races on Monday will start at noon, and it is intended, we believe, to adhere as closely as possible to the announced time for the starting of the other races. Mr Watson, who has the gates this year, intimates that persons going to the Forbnry iu traps need not fear being subjected to a repetition of the imposition practised upon them last year, as he will only charge for the vehicle, and not for the persons it may contain.
The Earthquake. —Tho shock of earthquake fe t in Dunedin on Wednesday was also experienced in the country districts. Near Utepopo it was felt at 12 45 p.m., and is described as having been a rumbling sound resembling thunder, with a direction from north to south. It was also observed that the waters of the Otepopo river were disturbed on the surface ; the oscillatory movement Listed from three to four seconds. At Waikouaifi it was also felt at 1.45 p.m., but ouly slightly; and at Pleasant Valley M>‘ Young observed the door leading from the kitchen into the bar open and shut without any obvious cause except the earthquake, there being no wind at the time. Chamber of Commerce. Some business was done after our reporter left tiie meeting yesterday. A disc ission took place on the letter of the General Manager of Telegraphs, which stated, in answer to tee Chamber’s application for a reconsideration of its request for tho supply of shipping telegrams, that the matter bad received the grave consideration of the Government, who were uuab|.e to alter their previously announced decision, T)ic request of the Chamber was that instead of the Telegraph Department supplying reports of tbo movements of the smaller coastal steamers, it should give regular information as to the arrival of vessels from Great Britain at New Zealand ports ; the arrival of steamers from Melbourne at the first port they make on the coast; and the arrival of steamers from Sydney or Melbourne, at Auckland.
