The p.s. Samson sailed for Oamaru at 9.15 to-day. The brigantine Bertha was signalled at the Heads at 3.50 p.m. to-day. but up to four o’clock the port of her departure had not been ascertained. The American mail steamship Nebraska sailed with the mails via San Francisco at 4.25 last evening. The s.s. Hangitoto, from Melbourne, left the Bluff at 4.50 last evening; experienced fine weather on the passage, and was berthed alongside the hulk Cincinatti at 3 45 this morning. The following coasting vessels sailed this forenoon :—Fanny, for Oamaru ; Oriti, for Bluff; Annie, for Coast; Lloyd’s Herald, for Gatlin’s River; Result, for Waikouaiti; and Redcliffe, for Oamaru. On or about the “25th instant, the Parana, the pioneer vessel of a new line of steamships between Hong Kong and Melbourne, is expected to reach this port. The Parana has been despatched by Messrs Norton, Lyell, and Co., shipping merchants at Hong Kong, at the instance of Kong Ming, the Chinese merchant, of Melbourne. Tim Parana, according to a telegram received from Norton, Lyell, and < b , was to leave for Melbourne on the Ist November with a cargo of tea, &e., and some passengers. She is under contract to deliver the cargo in Melbourne within twenty-live days from the date'of departure, which will make her due on the day stated. It is intended to despatch a steamer from Hong Kong every three months direct to Melbourne, the return voyage, however, to be made via Sydney and Newcastle, if thought de-irable. It will thus be possible for the service to be maintained by one steamer, though the traffic is expected ere long to become considerable enough for the employment of more vessels. A direct traffic with the Chinese ports is regarded as a matter of commercial importance, and the experiment which is now being made will be watched with interest, — Argus, Nov. 9.
