THE LATE FIRE.
To the Editor. Allow me to insert a few lines with reference to the lute fire that was discovered at the back of Fleet street, on the 17th inst. It is nothing but right that the public should know the truth, as it appears in yesterday’s Dally Timer paper that lignite ashes was the cause of the lire. This statement is utterly fajse, as there is no lignite ashes near the premises. There was the refuse of old leather and sawdust burning when the constable and other people were present. What might have been the cause of the fire is simply this - same children may have been playing with' lucifer matphes, as on the following morning the constable examined the remains of the debris, and found two lucifer matches, partly bunjed) laying about faixUcu inches
apart on each aide of the fire. This is about the true cause of the fire ; for if there had been lignite ashes burning, the wax would have been melted olf the lucifers. I am, &c., An Lntruestbd Party. Dunedin, Nov. 20, __ (For continuation oj News see fourth page.)
