Tin: Nisw Bank. --- Mr Adam Burnea, the newly appointed manager of the National Bank of Now Zealand, leaves Melbourne for Canterbury at the beginning of the year.

Otago Institute.—The papers to be read at the meeting of the Otago Institute to-morrow evening, as announced at the last meeting, will be (1) “On the influence of Temperature on Infant Mortality,” by Dr Deck ; {‘2) “ On an Astronomical Telescope

of New Construction,” by Mr Hy. Skcy; and (3) “On the Nature of the Zodiacal Light as revealed by the Spectroscope,” by Mr Webb. Princess Theatre.— “ Richelieu ” was repeated on Saturday night to a fair attendance. The birthday tableau was again exhibited, and was received with as much enthusiasm as attended its first representation. Fire. —At 4.30 a.m. yesterday, a little girl gave information at the Police Mation of a lire having broken out in the Arcade, Sergeant Beaven, who was on duty, despatched to the spot Constable Meekle, who found that some rubbish between the Arcade and the < 'ommoivial Stables was on fire. '1 he constable procured assistance and quickly extinguished it. It is supposed that the ignition of the rubbish was can sea by a neighbor throwing out some live cinders the previous night, Roslyn.—The Roslyn and Kaikorai Institute held their weekly meeting in the Roslyn Hall on Tuesday evening. The President, Mr A. H. Ross, occupied the chair. The essayist for the evening (Mr Heid) not being present, the President delivered an interesting address upon “ Printing,” in which by various proof copies which he handed round to the members of photo-lithographs which bad been executed by Mr Macaul, ho shewed the high state to which that branch of the art had been brought through the labor and experiments of that gentleman. On Tuesday evening next an essay will be delivered by one of the members. Subject, “ Sound,” with illustrations.

Garrick Reefs.—Last week the Nil Desperandum Comoany cleaned up the first crushing at their new machine of 54 tons, with a result of 630z. Ihey have 300 tons of stone at grass, wiih prospects fully an ounce to the ton. Logan’s battery has started work with a small lot ef about 40 tons from the ilobert Burns. The Golden Gate on the same line is as yet in statu quo; the Elizabeth Company have struck the reef at their low level, the stone being about twenty inches thick. The last crushing, 70 tons, yielded only 420?, of gold. The Heart of Oak and Star of the East claims are pushing forward their works most satisfactorily, the stone maintaining a good thickness and the yield being up to the average. The Caledonian and olleen Bawn are creeping into public favor, the yields from each being highly satisfactory. The Jackson troupe open at the Masonic Hall to-night. We would remind our readers that the concert ip aid of the North Dunedin School prize funj w/ll take place this evening at the schoolhoufse. The members of the Dunedin V teer Artillery will muster for gun drill at the Drill Shed to-morrow (Tuesday) evening at 7.30. Quarterly meeting after drill. We would remind our readers that Miss Jenny Nye’s benefit takes place this evening, when “London Assurance” will be played, to be followed by a musical melange
