SERIOUS AFFRAY AT INVERCARGILL.
A man named James M'Laren is in custody on a charge of wounding with intent to murder one Malcolm Shaw, foreman of laborers on Campbell’s contract for the Mataura railway. The facts elicited at the magisterial enquiry are these:—On the evening of the 11th inst., Graham and ?ome other men were drinking at M‘Laren’a store at Edeudale, and ultimately got drunk. They fought, M'Laren knocking Shaw down, and when down striking him on the face several times. M'Laren was then taken away by some bystanders. Afterwards, Shaw had a drink with M'Laren, and later in the night he was turned out of the store by M'Laren. He went away a few yards, lay down, and dropped off to sleep. He afterwards heard a voice over him, and felt a knife in him. The voice said, “ You Scotch. The knife was in bis right side. Prosecutor was only able to identify M'Laren by his clothes. A laborer named Black gave this evidence :—“-Saw the fighting between M'Laren and Shaw. Shaw came in a second time, and spoke to M'Laren. Witness did not hear what he said, being deaf, but understood he was provoking M'Laren. M'uareu picked up something from the counter which he took to be a knife. Witness said, “ What are you going to be up to now, Jamie ? ’ M'Laren then put Shaw out, and they both fell together at the door. Witness did not follow them, but went to attend to his ferment. Went out afterwards, Shaw was lying on the ground ; tried to get him in, but could not manage it, and so left him, Did not notice then whether he was hurt or not. Found the knife produced on the grass next morning where Shaw was lying, the blade covered half way up with blood. There was a small pool of blood on the grass.” Shaw has been remanded for eight days, and admitted to bail, himself in L2OO, and two sureties of LIOO each.
