This Day. (Before His Worship the Mayor ami J. Brown, Esq.,J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. Henry Townsend was fined 5s ; Anne Hardy, against whom there were some twenty convictions, 40s, or fourteen days; Catherine Cameron, alias Ryder, 40s, or seven days’ imprisonment, Peter Butter was charged with being incapable of taking care of himself whilst in charge of a horse at 3.15 p.m. yesterday. Sergeant Mallard said accused bad lately been in the Lunatic Asylum, and did not seem to be perfectly sane yet. Remanded for medical examination. NEGLECTED CHILD. Martha Howie, a young girl whose father resides at Palmerston, and mother and brothers at Hamilton, was charged with being a neglected child. Sergeant Mallard said that accused bad been going about soliciting people to take her to the theatre. She had lately been in the Industrial School, but now was over the allowed age, viz., fifteen, or he should have applied to nave her sent there. Case remanded till the rismg of the Court; but subsequently the Mayor had the child forwarded to her mother at his own cost, BYE-LAW CASE. John Hill was fined 2s 6d, without costs, for allowing the chimney of his house to take fire. INDECENT LANGUAGE. Ch 'rles Cooper v, Mary Morecombe.—Mr E, Cook for plaintiff. Mary Cooper, wife of plaintiff; h'lora, his daughter; and James Neill deposed to having heard defendant make use of tho language complained of. Defendant pleaded guilty, but said that Mrs Cooper had made use of worse language to her ; but, as she had no witnesses, the Bench did not believe her story, and fined her 40s, or fourteen days’ imprisonment.
