MR STAFFORD AS A TRUE PATRIOT.

The following, taken from Hansard, are Mr Stafford’s remarks about “ leaving the country” : Of course, as long as the Government could get the money to borrow, they would go on in the line they had chalked out for themselves ; there was no possible precaution or counsel that they would attend to so long as they could get the money to borrow. He was fast arriving at the frame of mind of the hon. membor for Kangitikei, when he re* turned to this country after his visit to Jericho, when that gentleman expressed a wish that the credit of the country might be so low that they would not bo able to borrow another sixpence. Ho would have been dis* posed to get into that frame of mind some time ago ; but, looking at it entirely from a personal point of view, he was becoming perfectly indifferent as to the effect of the country borrowing, and he Loped its credit would not become so low for two or three years. He would be perfectly satisfied, speaking from a personal point of view, that the next two or three years should pass over before their borrowing powers were exhausted. After that, it would be a matter of perfect incliff, reroe to him what would bj the position of .New Zealand. He did not think that would have been the result of his colonising career ; but, in consequence of the action which the Legislature had determinedly taken during the last two or three sessions, he was now preparing to leave New Zealand as fast as possible, and he hoped the next few year's would place him in a suitable position for a Finance Minister of New Zealand.
