The Fictitious Debate. Tho Auckland correspondent of a contemporary says “The New Zealand Herald ex plains that it was grossly deceived with respect to the fictitious debate which was supposed to have taken place iu the American Congress when it was proposed to subsidise Webb’s steamers. It appears to me that the Herald's explanation satisfies no one. In reference to it, at intervals nearly all to-day, one hears such remarks as these, viz.—‘Humbug! rot ! Lon’t we all know that that scoundrel M'Cann’s lies were circulated all over New Zealand for the express purpose of damaging the Fox-Vogel Ministry f ”
