THE NEW JURY SYSTEM OF ENGLAND.

The Juries Bill of the law officers of the Government has been considered by a select committee, and is reprinted as amended, J t contains 109 clauses, and begins with defining the qualifications of jurors, including among the persons liable to serve as special or common jurors persons who have occupied for six months prior to Midsummer day “any house or part of any house” in the parish which shall be of a certain value if let unfurnished. Notice is to be sent by post to every man put on the jury-list by the overseers for the first time, the notice to state when and where any objection he hrß to make will he heard. The number of jui'ors, whether in civil or criminal cases, is to be reduced from twelve to seven, ex* cept in cases of treason, felony, and murder. Jury summonses are to be sent by most, and every juror snmmoned is to have eight’ days’ notice. For service on a jury sworn for any civil trial jurors arc to be paid LI each if it be a special jury, and 2s if a, common jury ; in cases of disputed compensation for lauds to be taken for a public undertaking, Li a day and 10s a day respectively. In criminal cases either party may, by leave of the Court, have a special jury. Jurors may be allowed by the judge to have the use of a fire when locked up, and may be allowed to have reasonable refreshment at their own expense. Jurors in criminal trials lasting more than one day may be released by the judge from detention during the adjournments, The lists of persons liable to serve on juries are to be made out annually by the overseers. No man siimmoned to serve is to be again summoned in the same county until all other men whose names are in the list have been called upon for service.
