The following rules having been approved of by His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief, now become the Standing Regulations for Target practice in the Otago District. Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers commanding firing parties at the Rifle Ranges will be responsible for any infraction of these rules. By order. JOHN JAMES ATKINSON, ORDERS TO BE OBSERVED ON RIFLE RANGES. To prevent the possibility of accidents, the following orders are to bo strictly observed on all ranges in the Otago District tObders for the Senior Officer or NonCommissioned officer at the Firing No 1 Not to allow any practice to take place’ until the large red flag is hoisted on the signal staff. No. 2. Not to allow a man to fire rmtil the shot of the previous man (should it strike the target) has been signalled. No 3. To hoist the danger flag, and order the squad to “ cease firing” immediately the red flag is raised form the marker’s butt, or any person or animal appears in front of the firing party ; and on no account to allow any firing to proceed so long as the danger flag is up at the marker’s butt; when the said flag is lowered, the flag at the firing point to be dropped, and the order given to commence firing. No. 4. Where there are two targets on the nftrnf. range, the parties are to fire at the same distances, and not one class in front of another. When the flag at the marker’s butt is raised, both squads will cease firing until the flag is lowered. No. 5. To see that all persons, who desire to watch the practice, stand in rear of, and clear of, the squad; and on no account to permit persons not actually volunteers to take part in the firing (unles by permission of the offieer commanding the district). No, 6. Competitors wishing to empty their rifles, must do so at tho place pointed out by the officer in charge. No. 7. No competitor is to cap or cock bis rifle before coming to the spot from which he is to fire. No competitor is to let the hammer of his rifle down when an unexploded cap is on the nipple, but to keep it at half cock. Competitors before firing are to take a few paces in front of the squad, and to see that no objects are in the line of fire. No. 8. The senior officer or non-com-missioned officer on the range will be responsible that the rules are carried out. Note.—The practice of firing at the target without a marker in the butt is strictly prohibited, as also the practice of employing boys as markers. ORDERS FOR THE BUTT MARKERS. No. 1. To see that the large flag is hoisted on the flag-pole. No. 2 To see that the danger flag is hoisted before leaving the butt whenever it is necessary to clean the target, and the flag to remain up as long as the markers are out, or any person or animal in the line of the range. No. 3. To lower the danger flag directly the range is clear. No. 4. When first-class ranges are being fired, to sit or stand as close as possible to the back wall of the butt. J.
