Self-Destruction. — His Honor Mr Justice Johnston appears to hold opinions concerning suicide somewhat at variance with those generally entertained. This will be understood when we state that he recently informed a Wellington Grand Jury, which had thrown out the bill against a man charged with an attempt at self-destruction, “ that he looked upon the result as one of the best evidences of the advantage of the grand jury, though he had heard the extraordinary argument used that the throwing out of indictments was a good reason why the grand jury should be abolished. To bis mind the present case was strong evidence of its utility, us the result was better for the community, and far bettor for the man, than if a needless exposure had been made in Court.” As the facts of the case were suppressed, the public may infer one of two tilings either the accused was falsely charged, which is not at all likely, or his Honor considers those who ineffectually essay the taking of their own life sufficiently punished by failure.
