EXTRAORDINARY RIFLE SCORES.

We learn from the London Standard of the 18th July that at Wimbledon Corporal Larkin, of the Canadian team, made the extraordinary score, at 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each range, of 56, being the highest possible score, in addition to which his four sighting shots were all bulls-eyes. This marvellous achievement was accomplished with a Metford match rifle. Yet more extraordinary was Mr Edward Ross’s score in the Albert competition, second stage. The range was 1000 yards, and the number of shots fifteen, and iMr Ross actually made, with a Metford rifle, eleven bulls eyes and four centres, or 56 out of a possible 60 ! Of course, he took the LIOO prize Corporal Laykin, the hero of the Canadian team, made 54, and Mr Ward, of Chester, tied him with the same number. For the any Rifle Wimbledon Cup, restricted to winners of certain prizes and challenge plates, seven shots each at 600 and 1000 yards, Mt Edward Ross, shooting with bis pet Metford rille, made, an hour betoreevening guulirc, one of those scores which arc all but incredible, and which bear unexpuguable testimony to the absolute perfection to which rifles and shooting have now been brought. In every one of his fourteen shots he had made bullseyes ! Such shooting as this can only result in one of two things—either the size of the targets must be diminished, or the dimensions of the eyes must be reduced. Presently we shall have everybody making bullseyes at every range, and that will never do. But honor to Mr Boss, the best small-bore shot in England. If his health had allowed him to make himself an efficient so as to enter for the Queen’s, Sergeant Mitchie and everybody else might have retired at a very early period of the competition.
