SCHOOL COMMITTEE-MEN IN VICTORIA.
Considerable amusement was created in the Victorian Assembly by au boa. member, in the cause of the Education Debate, read* ing the following samples of entries made by local committee-men : “ Vistcd this school and found present'2s4 tilings in a ordley manner - and to the satesfaction of all with whom I here converst with.” “I on of the loeal comtee visted this school and found pasent 27 children and to all appiereuce everything goinging on all wright and Mr given all satesfaction to all partis.” ' • “ I have this day visted this scholl. Pound the children grately improved both in disciplen and education.” “ I have this day vistied the school, well concerctcd, great improvement.” *■ Viseted the school. roods verey hevvey, small attendance.” (Laughter.) “ Viseted the school, found all in good oarder, and acting on weel.” “ Visited Ithe school, which I found In verry efficient state.” “Mode a visit to school, everything in good order, but a terable storm raging out Side.” (Much laughter.) “ Visted the school, orrganicasion very in* different pensills to short.” (Laughter.) “ Beging (in nayhorhood went to school, found master asslcep, scolars playing.” The gentleman who read these selections agreed that it was most objectionable to subject gentlemen who were not only educated but trained for the position of teachers, to the criticism tnd the discipline of the local population —the baker, the storekeeper, and the three or four diggers who went to make up the local committee —well meaning honest men in their proper po.-itions, and perfectly capable of doing what the new Vducation Bill proposed they should do, viz., take care of thu building and raise money for its re-
quirements, but wholly unqualified to criticise the organisation and oiscipline of the teacher, and to enter the results of their observation in the school books.
