SHOCKING MURDER AT WAIKAVA.
A MOTHER DROWNS HER THREE CHILDREN.

A fearful occurrence is reported from Waikava. A woman, the wife of a German settler named Carl Vitting, who has been long resident here, had been subjected to cruel treatment by her husband, who re* peatedly deserted her; and it is thought that his conduct preyed upon her mind. On the afternoon of Saturday she took her four youngest children—her family consisting of eight—saying that she was go ng to look after cows, and went about a mile into the hush, whore she deliberately attempted to drown the children in tho Waikavi creek* The eldest, a girl aged nine years, struggled out of the water, and saw her mother hold* ing the baby under the water. She gave the alarm to two men who were wood-splitting, and they recovered the bodies of the three children, who were severally aged eight years, five years, and eleven months. The woman having hidden in the bush, the police searched all night for her, and succeeded in apprehending her yesterday forenoon. An inquest is to be held to-morrow.
