Diamonds in Califoknia, Great excitement prevails at San Francisco by tbc discovery of large quantities of diamonds, rubies, sapphires, &0., from Arizona (or said to be from there), early this mouth (August). Several companies, with capital 10,000,000 dollars each, have been formed to work the diamond holds, and many parties are preparing to start for the [ lace as soon as the discoveries are confirmed. The alleged discoveries are in the heart of the Apache country, where none but the largest and best settled companies could work in even comparatively safety, and where wood, water, and grass are very scarce. The first company organised displayed several hundred thousand dollars’ worth of the precious stones, and promised to have their agent back within sixty days with at least a million dollars’ worth more. He has returned since without any, and is so very reticent about the matter that the public suspect the whole affair a soli, and the stock in the company, which sold rapidly at 40 dollars per share, could not now be disposed of any price. Few persons now believe that the diamonds came from Arizona, though it is not doubted that the rubies, which are small and of little value, abound.
