MAYOR’S COURT.
Tms Day. (Before His Worship the Mayor,) TM.EC ALLY ON PREMISES. Frank Fmmersoo, alias Frank Anderson, was charged with being illegally on the promises of Mary Robinson, Moray Place, Dunedin, on Monday night. The complainant stated she retired to bed between ten and eleven ; was awoke by a man striking a Incifcr, and asked him, “What brings you in my bedroom?” He replied, “ I have come through your door ; why not fasten your door and window !” He further stated ho was a detective come to watch her. She said she would send for a policeman, hut he replied he did not care, as fie had her name in his honk, and would have her up the next morning. FJie then sent her daughter Emily for a Mr Wilson. in the Supreme Court yesterday,— By prisoner : Her house was not frequented by men, neither had she ever drank with him. Emily Robinson and W. Wilson corroborated the complainant’s evidence. —Prisoner said it was his first offence, and if overlooked ho would not appear before the Court again.— He was sentenced to forty-eight hours’ imprisonment with hard labor. THEFT. Margaret Bradshaw, alias Hickey, was charged with stealing from the yard of Edward Hogan, hotelkeeper, Stafford street, a shawl, valued at LI 2s fid. Prisoner said she had picked up the shawl, and intended to return it, and that she informed the app ehenniiig constable of her intention, but that was denied by him. The Bench, however, did not give credence to her statement, and as that was her second offence, sentenced her to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor, George Farrington, alias Woods, was charged with stealing a bag of raisins, valued at ss, the property of W. Ferguson, carrier. His defence was rather amusing. He said ho yesterday received 5s from a surf-boat man at Oamaru ; that as it was the only money he had, ho thought he would have a treat, arid accordingly purchased the raisins from a sailor. The Bench did not believe his story, and gave him seven days’ hard labor.
