BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.

( prom the Kew Zealand Press Association.)

Napier, Oct. 15. Five Natives have been poisoned at Waipukurau, and two have died. It is supposed a bag of flour purchased by them from a store contained arsenic. Mr Locke, R.M., has gone by coach this morning to assist in making investigations. Inspector M ‘Donnell, A.C., died at Wairoa last week, and was buried with military honors. The wreck of the Esther is to be sold to-day.

Auckland, October 13. The Melanesian Mission schooner Southern Cross has arrived, after a successful cruise. She reports all the Mission stations are progressing satisfactorily ; sighted H.M.S. BlancheandH. M.S. Basilisk cruising amongst the islands. The volcano on the island of Fana is unusually active. The whaling season at Norfolk Island was remarkably good this year.

Presentation to a Compositor.— On Saturday last, the printing employes on the staff of this journal presented a very handsome skeleton timepiece, under a glass shade, to Mr John Jones, on the occasion of ljis retirement from the profession. Mr Jones has been nine years in the office as a compositor, and is now about to follow agricultural pursuits.— Lyttelton Times, September 16. The New Registrar-General of Land.— According to the Lyttelton Times the appointment, we believe, was offered to Mr Williams immediately after the resignation of his predecessor, and then declined on the ground that he had an insuperable objection to the consequent removal from Canterbury to Wellington. That difficulty, it appears, has been removed, and Christchurch will thus become tiic head-quarters of the department. No fitter person could have been selected for the office than Mr Williams, and the appointment does Mr Stafford as much credit as the conditions on which it was accepted reflect honour on the new Eegistrar-General. Extraordinary Prices for Racehorses. —We {Argus) see by the English papers that the price obtained fur Hlair Athol at the sale of the Middle-park stud was incorrectly given in the telegraphic news received via Adelaide. Instead of LI, 250, Blair Athol, who was purchased by the tud Company, fetched the extraordinary price of L 12.500, the largest sum, we believe, ever known to have been paid for any racehorse. At the same sale the following purchases were also made :—Brcadalbane (Count Lohn dorf), 1.6,000; Gladiateur (Captain Lay), L 7,000 ; King John (Mr T, Fain), L 720 ; Lord Harewood (Mr Sexton), L*2so ; [Mandrake (Mr Wethciby), L2,l()0 ; Marsyas (the Stud Company), L 750 ; Saunterer (Mr T. Pain), L2 100 ; Uncas (German Stud Company), L 250; Victorious tthe Stud Company), L 2,000; Warlike (Mr Chaplin), L 650; Seclusion (MrT. E. Walker), L 2,500 ; Tunstall Maid <Mr T. E.
