THE VOLUNTEERS.

The North Dunedin Riiles inaugurated the shooting season on Tuesday by a match between oliicers and men; the conditions being—ranges 300, 400, and 000 yards ; five shots at eacli; no sighting shots ; ten men aside. The scores were : officers, 290 ; men, 333.

The Dunedin Volunteer Artillery held the third competition for tlcir Challenge Cup this morning, at the Anderson’s Bay range, on the following conditions, viz. : Seven shots, at ranges of 200, 500, and GOO yards ; Wimbledon targets, Hythe position, and Government rifles and ammunition, no sighcing shots, &c. The weather could not have been better, and yet, strange to say, the scores were very poor, the only reason for which is, we suppose, the longer ranges being fired iu the no w exploded kneeling position. Several of the best shots of the Battery were well together at the end of the 500 yards range, at the last shot of which the nipple of Liefit. Muir’s rilie, who was well up in the total, Avas blown out, injuring his hand, and putting him out of the race for the cup. At the conclusion of the last range, the ten highest stood as follows :

The ties being fired off shot for shot at the longest range resulted as folloAVS Fisher made a centre and Lambert an outer, the former taking the third prize, and the latter the fourth. Smith made a centre, Avinniug the fifth prize ; and Statham a miss, taking the sixth. Reid, too, made a centre to iuuir’s miss, and takes seventh place.
