THE PORT RAILWAY.
To the Editor. Sir, —1 congratulate the Dunedin and Port Chalmers Railway Company on having so far succeeded in their enterprise—the line of railway being in good working order about as far as the Brewery from here ; the locomotives “Rose” and “Josephine” being also in good working-order, and running daily with material for ballasting purposes. But, Sir, 1 am sorry I cannot congratulate them on the excellent arrangements they have made to prevent accidents at the various street crossings while their engines are running, I think, Sir, something should be done by them to protect the lives and limbs of the citizens who have frequently to cross over the line of railway at Wickliffe terrace and Beach street. One accident has already occurred, and unless they place gates or some other barrier at the places mentioned, I fear we will have many similar accidents taking place. I trust a word to the wise will on this occasion be sufficient. —I am, &c., Protection. Port Chalmers, Sept. 17.
