Ireland, leaving his express waggon unattended, 2s 6d ; James Day, chimney' on tire, 2s Gd; Wm, Greenwood, keeping an unregistered dog, 40s and costs.—The Mayor said it would be well for owners of dogs to know that the Ordinance gave the Bench no option but to fine 40s in cases where nonregistration was proved. Several other cases were summarily dealt with. ASSAULT. John Campbell v. John M‘Connell, and M ‘Connell v. Campbell, Mr E. Cook for Campbell ; Mr Harris for defendant. The evidence showed that a most unprovoked assault had been committed. The parties reside at Blueskin. Campbell is a carpenter, and works in town during the week, returning home on Saturday nights ; M‘Connell is the son of a farmer. Campbell was going home on the evening of the iust., and meeting M ‘Connell and hia mother, said “good evening ” to the lady, whereupon the son turned round and struck him a severe blow on the eye. It was alleged that some ill-feeling existed between the parties, owing to disputes arising out of the bush-fires in the district last summer; but that fact was not clearly brought out. M‘Connell was

fined L 5 and costs ; and the cross action dismissed.
