New Motive Power. The Bruce Herald reports that the screw principle of motive power, designed by Mr J. T, Thomson, and proposed to be applied to a flour mill on the Clutha river, has not proved effective, and that a paddle-wheel is to be substituted. The Attorney-General and the Bench.— ln the debate on Mr Swanson’s motion for making the Attorney-Generalship apolitical office, Mr Stafford is reported, to have said :—“ Better terms could not have been made with the present AttorneyGeneral (who receives L2OO a year more than his predecessors ) The negociations were carried on between himself and the AttorneyGeneral for five or six months before the latter would consent to the terms offered. Me at first gave a peremptory refusal. That gentleman came up once or twice to see him on the subject; and went back refusing to accept the office, and it was solely on account of his (Mr Stafford’s) great persistency, the inducement of an augmentation to the salary provided by statu :e, and the prcmise of a judgeship, if a vacancy should arise, that the Attorney-General was induced to accept the office. He considered that promise binding upon himself. If in office again, and a vacant judgeship arose, and the Attorney-General claimed it, he would consider himself in honor bound to give it to him.”
