THE ATHENÆUM.

To the, Editor.

Sir,—l hardly knew whether to cry, blush, or laugh when reading a letter signed “Catholicus” in this morning’s Times. I have since cut the interesting letter out, and put it in my scrap-book, but even in that place it looks foolish. Has “Catholicua” ever joined the Athemuuni ? If so, when ? I do not think he ever has.

Talk about Immigration and Public Works agony ! Set this gentleman on public folly, then we shall see some rare fun. He will then show his colors like a speckled horse on a county day. Allow me to inform “Catholicus” that the Athenoeum is not a general church library, nor yet does it favor one religion more than another. “ Catholicus ” had better start a library on his own account. I think, and so do hundreds of others, that the books of the Atheuceum are one of the best assortments in !New Zealand, and also that the whole arrangement is managed in a most creditable manner. “ Catholicus ” must be very hard up, indeed, for something to grumble at when he falls upon the Athenamra, and one of the worst things he could do is to run down any public institution, especially one so useful to all classes as the Atheiueum. For goodness sake,- “ Catholicus,” do not write about things you know so little of, and pray do not make out as if you were writing with the assurance that every Catholic agrees with you I refer you to a splendid book, which you will no doubt read with interest—viz,, “The Good Little Boys.” No danger of your doing anything naughty after reading it.— I am, &c., One or the “ Howling Swells,” Dunedin, August 27.
