In breadstuffs and grain, the market, since the arrival of last news from Australia, baa become mush livelier. For best brands of floor, there is a capital demand. The bakers are buying with more confidence. For parcels the price is Ll3; for trade lots, Ll3 10s. In second class flour, a fair trade la being done at Lll. Bran is firm at 1.3 10s. Pollard, L 5 10’. Oatmeal has a good trade sale at Lll 10s to Ll2. An active inquiry for prime milling wheat has set in. Holders are not pushing sales. Parcels in store are held for 5s 6d, but sales for forward delivery are made at 5s 4d ; second class kinds meet with a very limited sale—the value is not over 4s 6d. Fowl wheat is scarce, but sales canrot be effected at a price over 3s. Oats have not improved. 'irade lots of feeding are being disposed of at Is lOd, and good milling kinds bring Is lid and 2s. Malting barley continues scarce, for prime samples, 5s 6d to 5s 9d is the value; feeding sorts are in demand at 4a 3d to 4s 6d. Straw, L2; hay, L 3 15s; chaff, L 3 15s ; potatoes, L 7. A. Mercer reports for the we*k ending August 24 :—Retail prices only—Fresh butter, in ilb and lib prints, best quality, Is 4d to Is 6d per lb; second quality, Is 4d; fresh butter in lumps, Is 2d; powdered and salt butter, best quality, Is 2d; second, lOd to lid, A considerable improvement has taken place this week in the supply of fresh butter, and a fall in prices may be shortly expected. Really go~d samples of salt butter are not to be had, and may be quoted from lOd to Is per lb. Cheese is in good request; geod samples are however scarce, and worth 8d to 9d per lb ; second quality, 6d per lb. Side and rolled bacon is fetching 9d to lOd. Quite a reaction has taken place in the egg market this week, storekeepers are more than stocked, and the price per doz, may bo quoted at Is 2d.
