ARROWTOWN.
(from our own correspondent.)
Samuel Holly left this morning, 19h iusfc., in charge of Constable Quin, en route for Dunedin, where he stands committed to takq bis trial on a charge of stealing L9B, in ge’d and notes, from the dwelling of one Robert Watson at Arrqwtown, Considerable interest xias been felt in this oase by the public here, as the accused is an old resident, hr 9 hitherto borne an excellent character, and, as a miner, held a very respectable position. The robbery was committed last May, ard but little hopes were entertained of the d< • tection of the perpetrators. Sergeant Hunt however, with the most praissworty perseverance continued to investigate the matter ; and at length succeeded in obtaining information which led to the arrest of the prisoner, upon whom some of th£ missing property was found.
A serious accident occurred on Fridaylast to a man named Sharp, who, while harnessing a restive horse, received a kick on the head, which fractured the skull and ex* posed the brain to view. He has been removed to the hospital, and under the care of Hr * Jouglas is progressing as wed as could, unkir the circumstances, be expected. The severity of tire weather has had the efloct of increasing the sick list, to some ex« teivt, in tl.i, neighborhood ; but it appears likely that fine and warm weather will soon take the place of the arctic temperature, which it has been during the la it few' months our Jot to endure, and which must have seriously retarded mining and agricultural operations. I have heard that Grace’s claim on the Shotover was sold to day at Queenstown to a buyer on behalf of the defendants (Grace and Co.) for L5.9C0, that one hour was allowed for the money to be paid; that Grace and Co proposed to defer the payment until an action now pending in the District Court shall be decided, but that this arrangement was refused. The claim -was again put up for sale and knocked down to a party working some rich ground in thej same neighborhood for LS'ODO. Tips second sale was at tfie risk of the former purcha-. sers.
The Committee of the Miners Association waited upon Mr Warden Stratford and heartily welcomed him to the district. Mr
Stratford expressed himself as very favorably disposed towards that body, the utility of whioh he stated was already felt in the Province ; and said that he should c ill upon them whenever he felt that they could be of service to him in any matter regarding the welfare of the district The committee assured Mr Stratford that it would be their pride to co-operate with him whenever occasion afforded, and that they should call upon him for co-operation under similar circumstances. The same body, later in the evening, presented an address to Mr R. E. Field, on the occasion of his departure i-or Naseby, at a social reunion at which Mr Stratford and all the principal residents of the town and neighborhood were present. The toasts included the names of Mr arden Stratford and Mr Warden Beetham.
