Crowded Out.—We are obliged to omit our report of the Waste Land Board meeting and other matter. Political.—We hear on good authority from Wellington that the Government are iikoly to have a majority of iour on Mr Stafford’s motion, which comes on to-night Princess Theatre. There was another good house ilast night. Miss Florence Beresford makes her d hut as a cantatrioe; and on Friday little “Affright” takes a bsnefit. Mayor’s Court.— His Worship the Mayor, aud H. Leary, Esq , J P., occupied the Bench at the Court this morning. Angus M’Phte was fined 40s, or seven days’ imprisonment, for drunkenness. Duncan M‘Arthur, for a similar offence, was fined in the amount of his bail, 40s. District Road Board Elections.— The nomination for the Sandymount subdivision of the Portobello district, took place yesterday at noon. The candidates were: — Messrs E. Aitchffon, G. Boyles, W. Dick, J, Thomson, D. Weipers, and Samuel Morris. The show of hands was in favor of Messrs Aitchison, Boyha, and Dick. No poll was demanded, and these were therefore declared duly elected.
Mr William Christie will deliver a lecture before the Society for Investigating Spiritualism, in the Lower Hall, Athemeum, to-morrow (Thursday) evening at 7.30. Subject : “ Spirit Communion —not Spiritualism—as a Fact of History,” Mr Cutten will address the electors of Cavershara district at the Green Island Drill Shed this (Wednesday) evening at 7 o’clock; and at the Higholiffe Schoolhouse to-morrow (Thursday) evening at 7 o’clock. Mr Tolmie wall also address the electors at the Uighclilfe Scaoolhouse tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 7 o’clock. With her customary benevolence, Mrs James Smith is endeavoring to obtain subscriptions on behalf of the youth Sutherland, who was injured by becoming entangled in the machinery of the flax mill at Blueskin, We understand that amputation of the right arm lias been found mcessary, and that the lad has no friends in this part of the country, we shall, therefore, be glad to receive subscriptions on his behalf at the Evenimj Star office, and to hand them to Mrs Smith for him. We .consider it a case worthy of assistance.
