THE TELEGRAPH.
Pending the receipt of the annual report of the General Manager of Telegraphs, a few figures frorp the statistics compiled by the Registrar-General showing tfie progreep of the department will prove interesting, The receipts of the department from, its opening to the end of 1871 were as follow:
In 1870 the shilling tariff was introduced, which accounts for the apparent decrease in that year’s receipts. On the other hand, it will be observed that in spite of a reduction of three-lifths, the returns show in the short space of two years a large increase over the receipts of 18(59, while we venture to assert that the returns for the half-year ended June, 1872, will when published show a still further increase. In 1871 Dunedin maintained the lead as the busiest station—its receipts were L 4334, as against Christchurch, L2I18; Hokitika, L 1714; Wellington, L 2990 ; Auckland, L 2639 ; and Grahamstown, L 2487.
