Tins Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor,) DRUNKENNESS. Daniel Mack was fined 10s. ALLEGED THEFT. James Burnett, on remand, was charged with stealing a quantity of tobacco, two picks, and other articles. The charge of stealing tobacco and other goods was withdrawn by the police ; and that of stealing the picks proceeded with. The telegram from sub-inspector Moore stating that two pick-handies had been identified at Clyde bearing the brand of the Heart and Oak Company, Cromwell, was put in, and some of the shareholders of the company deposed that the brand H. 0. 0., said to be on the picks was that of their company. In answer to a question by Mr Stout, who appeared for the defendant, o io of the witnesses expressed his belief that the picks had been lost some time since; it might be four months ago or more, Mr Stout raised the point that the evidence tended to show that over three months had elapsed since the commission of the alleged offence ; therefore his client should be discharged. In order to allow of the identification of the articles, and the production of further evidence, the defendant was further remanded till the 13th hist. BYE-LAW CASE. Patrick Bradley, for allowing cattle to wander, was fined 2s 6d and costs ; and Mathew Scott, driving cattle through the City during the day time, os and costs.
