STATISTICAL.

The statistical tables issued by the Registrar- 1 . encral in anticipation of the animal volume of statistics, have been laid before Parliament. We propose at present only to refer to those relating to population, under the heads ot immigration and emigration, births, and deaths. The population of the Colony when the census was taken in February, 1871, was 25b, 393, and the Regis-trar-General estimates the net increase for the ten succeeding months at 10,593, made up as follows :—lmmigration, 8329 ; birth, 2906. The deaths during the ten months were 2229, and the number of emigrants 4413, which, deducted from the total increase 17,235, leaves the net increase above mentioned. The emigrants during the period were composed of 0253 males, and 2076 females, and the births were 4571 males, and 4335 females, a nice balancing of the sexes. The deaths were 1378 males, and 851 females, and the number of those who left the Colony during the ten mouths was respectively 3371 and 1042. The immigration and emigration returns of the vaiions Provinces during the year 1871 arc as follow •

Of the total immigration, 3136 souls were from the United Kingdom, 4036 from the Australian Colonies, 23SS from other British ports, and 593 from Foreign States. Out of the whole emigration, 3802 were to the Australian Colonies. The births and deaths in the various Provinces during the year 1871 were as follow
