MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
The three candidates for South Ward addressed meetings of the ratepayers last evening.
Mr Walter’s meeting was at the Imperial Hotel. He explained the reasons of hi? candidature ; criticised in severe terms the personal canvass for votes instituted by Mr Brown ; advocated the purchase of the Waterworks, and praised the action of the Council ou the gas question. A vote of confidence in the candidate was proposed by Mr Bunce. seconded by Mr Jones, and carried unanimously. Mr Brown’s meeting was at Watson’s Royal Hotel, Mr Moss being in the chair. Mr Brown said he understood the gas question to he settled, and he hoped that old sore would not again be re-opened. He defended the purchase of both water and
gas works by the Corporation, but their pur* chase should not be rashly or hurriedly made. He would support no purchase by which the Council would be required to pay large amounts in exc ss of the real value of the works. He also advocated increasing the nuir her of counci dors ; the taking of means to utilise the southern market ; the cutting of the t ity reserves into alio tin nts, but that sohc’Tic would depend Upon the nature of the g.ouud and in what part of the City it was situated. If elected Mayor ho would lay out every fathing of the salary in charitable purposes. Mr Jamieson moved and Mr J. Moilison seconded a vote of enndcncc in Mr JBrcwn, which was carried unanimously. MrCouzens addressed a large meeting at Woodifield’s Bay View Hotel, and another meeting at the Golden Age Hotel ; Mr Kingston occupying the chair at the one, and Mr Jdaydeu at the other meeting. Votes of confidence in the candidate were carried at both p’aces.
PORT CHALMERS. The nomination of candidates for the election of Councillors and Auditors took place at the Town Hall, Tort Chalmers, this afternoon ; Mr Dench (the Mayor) presided. High Ward. —Mr William Murray was proposed by Mr D. M'Callum, and seconded by Mr James Smith. Mr Robert Beauchop, proposed by Mr J. B. Taylor, seconded by Mr W. Kettle. East Waro. —Mr Alexander MTvenzie was proposed by MrR. Ritchie, and seconded by J. r James M'Farland. Mr William Innes was proposed by Mr George Easton, and seconded by Air John Louden. Middle Ward. —Mr George Easton, proposed by Mr James Fergus son, seconded by Mr Robert Bolton, was elected without opposition. South Ward.— Mr David Millar, proposed by Mr John Louden, seconded by Mr George Warren, being the only candidate, was duly elected. Auditors —Mr Alexander Deck and Mr John Thomson were returned without opposition.
