Life Assurance, Captain Baldwin appears to have been very successful in his late visit to I awreucc. There ho succeeded in getting thirty applications for the benefit of assurance, and approximately the amount insured is about L 24,000. Soiree. —The annual soiree of the Wesleyan Trinity Church was held last evening, the hall below ’the church being crowded. Addresses were delivered by the revs J. Williams, Shaw, Dr Copeland, Mr Roseby, Mr Tsitt, and Mr Sutherland. The balance sheet showed the total income for tho year to be L 677 19s, leaving a balance of L2O in hand, after paying off all liabilities. The debt on the building remained at L 2173. none having been cleared off during the year, but out of the income stated LBO was spent on improvement. The anniversary collections amounted to 1.72. Ordinances Assented To. —lt is officially intimated that the Governor has not been advised to exercise his power of disallowance in respect of the following Ordinances passed by the Provincial Council at its last session :—The Otago Roads Ordinance Amendment Ordinance, Impounding Ordinance, Fencing Ordinance, Lawrence Athenamm and Mining Institute Ordinance, Police (Southland) Repeal Ordinance, Licensing Ordinances Amendment Ordinance, Hospitals (Southland) Ordinance Repeal Ordinance, Licensed Carriages Ordinance, Cemeteries Ordinance (Southland) Repeal Ordinance.

New Road Boards Ordinance. — A meeting of ratepayers was held at noon to-day at the Schooihousc, Green Island, for the purpose of electing three members to servo for the Corstorphine subdivision of the Suburban Road District ; the Returning Officer, Mr Charles Smith, presiding Five candidates were proposed. Messrs Thomas Thomson, James Gardiner Scott, John Ballantyne, Peter M'Lareu, David HowdenBofore the show of hands was taken, Mr Ballantyne expressed his willingness to stand ; and the show of hands being taken, fch/) result was as follows : —Thomson, 8 ; Scott, 6; M‘Laren, 7 ; Howden, 2. No poll being demanded, the returning officer declared Messrs Thomson, Scott, and M'Laren duly elected ; and a vote of thanks to the returning officer concluded • the proceedings.

Princess Theatre. —Mr Mnsgrave s friends rallied round him in strong force last evening. The house wa,s well filled in every part; and we were glad to see it so, for the beneficiary is a sterling actor, and is fully deserving of the support which was accorded him. Two new pieces were chosen for representation. In the first, “ Payable on Demand,” the leading features of the life of Anselin Rothschild—the founder of the great firm of capitalists, whose power is felt in almost every part of the civilised globehave been dramati ed—the playwright skiliully introducing some creations of his own, and filling in some incidents which together serve to produce an interesting play. As the old Jew Mr Miuigpye was excellent, though he was guilty of an absurdity which he should not r peat, A Jew neither prays nor swears on his knees. Miss Anstead, as Ooldsched’s wife in the earlier, and as his daughter in the later scenes, played well. The name of the afterpiece is, “ Wc have all our little Both pieces will be repeated to-night. Fire at Morninoton,-—This morning about one o’olock, as Thomas Jones, a slaughterman, was returning home from Dunedin, on reaching Yornington he discovered an empty house, the property and hate residence of Mr A. Bamford, was on (ire. Hp gave an alarm, and, with the assistance of his mate, endeavored to extinguish it, but without success. When he first saw it, the lean-to at the back of tbo building only appeared to be burning. The windows were all closed. He broke one, and entered the room, which was quite empty, and no one was to be seen about the premises, which were quickly burnt to the ground. The building was insured for L 450 with the Loudon and Liverpool Insurance Company, L3OO of which was to secure the Standard Investment .Society, and the remainder on bduili of Mr J. Hyman. The property was valued at LGOO, and had been lately let at a rental of LSD a year. It is supposed that the house being empty, some tramps had occupied the lean-to and carelessly Set it on fire, as lights had be n seen there by the neighbors for some nkhts past. No other conclusion could be arrived at from the inquiries made.

An emergency meeting of the Otago Kilwinning Lodge, No. 417, S.C., will bo held to-morrow ( Thursday) evening, in the Masonic Hall, at eight o’clock. lv ate payers favorable to the return of Mr Homy J, Walter for South Ward, are requested by advertisement to meet at the London Hotel this (Wednesday) evening, at eight o’clock.

A meeting of the Society for Investigating Spiritualism will take place tomorrow (Thursday) evening, in the hall below

the Athenamm, at eight o’clock, when the Rev. Mr Watts’s lecture on “ Spiritualism ’’ will be reviewed.

A general meeting of the members of the various Cricket Clubs will be held iri the Shamrock Hotel to-morrow (Thursday) evening, at eight o’clock. Business : —To consider a letter from the Christchurch Cricket Club on the advisability of making some arrangements in anticipation of a visit from the All-England Eleven.
