SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION.
So much interest is evinced in the result of tlie recent contest for the New Zealand scholarships that we purpose publishing the papers submitted to the candidates. We shall place the classical papers the last, although they seem, according to old custom, to have been most esteemed by the examiners. ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION. 1. Writ-; an essay on the subject “Works of Fiction,” including both prose and poetry. In the course of the essay give a sketch of the history of the imaginative literature of England from the time of Chaucer, mentioning the names of the principal writers in each epoch, hi conclusion, state your view of the probable influence of the modern novel upon the character and literature of the people. 2. Take any sentence from your essay of about six lines, give its complete analysis, and parse each word separately.
GENERAL HISTORY. 1. Give a short account of the origin and rise of the Mahomedan power; state over what countries it extended, and when its advance was checked in Europe. 2. Over what countries did the Empire of Charlemagne extend ? What kingdoms were formed out of it ? 3. Give a brief outline of the several Crusades, stating the principal leaders of each. 4. What countries of Europe are principally populated by the Keltic, Sclavonic, and Teutonic races severally ? 6. Give a brief account of Europe at the beginning of the f even teen th century, stating what countries were under the rule of each Sovereign, 6. Who were the electors of Germany? What was their function in the government of the empire ’ 7- What was the origin and moaning of the terms Guelf and Ghibelline ? 8. What was the origin of the separation of the Greek and Roman Churches ? What countries are now of the Greek, Roman, and Protestant Churches ? 9. What were the occasions and objects of each of the following hj agues and treaties ? The League of Sraalkalde; the Peace of Westphalia ; the treaty of Utrecht; the Edict of Nantes ; the Treaty of Ryswick ; the Treaty of Chateau Cambrensis. 10. Who were the following persons?— State in a few words for what each was cele. bratc I, and to what country he belonged, The Cid, the Chevalier Bayard, Hildebrand, Godfrey of Boui«lon, Mazarin, Arnold of Brescia, Philip, Von Artevelde, Richelieu, Oxenstiern, Savanarola, Sully, Abelard, Turcnne, Gheugis Khan, St Cuthbert, Bernadotte, Ignatius Loyola, the Constable de Bourbon, Thomas Aquinas, Michael Angelo. 11. What was the Hanseatic League? 12. When and where were the following inventions first brought into use ? the inventor, when known.— Printing, the mariner’s compass, the clock, gunpowder, th? steam engine, the telescope, the electric telegraph. ENGLISH HISTORY. 1. Describes briefly the Angle-Saxon Government before 800 a. d. State the classes into which society was divided. 2. What provinces of France belonged to Henry 11., and how did he acquire each? 3. Give a short notice of the life of Thomas hj, Bccket, especially stating the nature of his struggle with the king. 4. By what revenues was the Government supported under the Norman and PJantagenet kings ? 5. State the principal provisions of Magna Charta. 6. Explain the meaning and object of the Statute of Mortmain, 7. Of whom did the Parliament originally consist ? And how was the representation of the people introduced ? 8. State in few words what were the occasions of the follow iug battles, and who were the leaders :—Dunbar, Falkirk, Bannockburn, Crecy, Poitiers, Shrewsbury, Agincourt, Venieuil, St. Albans, Wakefield. Barnet, Bosworth, Flodden, Edgehill, Naseby, The Boyne, Blenheim, Malplaquet, Shcriffmuir, Dettingen, Fontcnoy, Oulloden, Bunker’s Hill, Plassey, Trafalgar, Camperdown, Talavera. 9. Make a Genealogical Table showing the descent of Henry VII. and of Elizabeth of York from Edward HI.
10. What were the reasons alleged—of public policy as well as of a private nature — for the divorce of Katherine of Arragon? 11. What were the grounds for the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots ? 12. What were the Petition of Right and and the Bill c f Rights ? _ 1.3. What was the specific crime for which, and the tribunal before which, Charles I. was tried ? 14. State the circumstances of the death of Lord William Russell and Algernon Sydney. 15. What was the nature of William lll.’s tit’e to the Crown ? 17. By what Acts is the succession to th« Crown of England settled. For the above three papers 1000 marks were attainable.
