Auckland, July 20. The Nebraska was signalledat 11.20 a.m. today. The ferry steamer, with the Health Officer, went down to her and returned at 2 p.m. for instructions. Captain Harding reported that the small-pox had disappeared at Honolulu and San Francisco, and that he had no disease or sickness cf any description on the return trip. The health authorities afterwards visited the ship. The Board sent Dr Philson twice to the ship, and the second s time left it to him to decide whether she should come up the harbor or not. She was released from quarantine at 7.30 p.m. She left Honolulu on July 3, and made the passage to Auckland in days. She brings 37 passengers ; eight saloon for Auckland, eight for Melbourne, and two for Lyttelton. For Port Chalmers, Messrs Hutt, G. P. Abram, and Chapman. London, June 20. The Senate accepted the supplemental article of the treaty of Washington withdrawing the indirect claims, but with modifications binding Groat Britain not to hold America responsible for indirect damages in any future negotiations between them. The British Government are dissatisfied with the modifications, and asked for further modification. America declared her own proposition to be an ultimatum.

The Geneva Tribunal met on Juno 15, according to the treaty ; Count Sclopsis, of Italy, presiding. Mr Bancroft Davis presented the American case, and declared himself ready to proceed. Lord Tcnterden presented a portion of the British case, and asked for an adjournment of the Tribunal for eight months. The Tribunal considered the adjournment with closed doors ; but the result is unknown. On the 19th, the Tribunal adjourned to the 26th. It is considered a favorable sign of the settlement of the difficu’ty. The Secretary officially intimated to the representatives of the Press that they will be admitted as soon as certain delicate questions are settled. The Tribunal’s decision on the adjournment is expected next session. The official correspondence between the British and American Governments on the Alabama claims, comprising fifty-three despatches, was published on the 17th. Henry won the Ascot Cup. The choir comprised 16,0U0 voices, and the orchestra 1500 instruments. ' There is a general strike of the mechanics and laborers of New York for eight hours* work and increased pay. Minister Sickles has been recalled from Spain. No successor will be appointed till the matters in controversy are settled. Congress adjourned to July 11. The Republicans have nominated Grant as President, and Henry Wilson as Vice. The Secretary to the Treasury has notified that the new loan is deferred on account of the delicate relations with Great Britain and Spain. Military and naval movements along the Gulf coast indicate a suspicion of approaching troubles with Spain. The Government regard unfavorably tho British proposal to postpone the Geneva arbitration. The correspond' nt of the Alla California. writing under date the 19th, says the American Government will not object to the postponement of the arbitration, and thinl a it will lose nothing by giving Great Britain a pretext to withdraw. No extra session of Senate will be called, and there is no information to warrant the belief that the efforts to adjust the differences will be inofectual. The eastern strikes are subsiding. At a piano makers’ meeting, a resumption of work was strongly urged. Singer’s sewing machine workmen and sugar refiners are still out; ’ also the workmen on the central railroad. The German men-of-war Veuietta and Gazelle captured two Haytian corvettes, and hold them till payment is made to German merchants for losses inflicted on German shipping. It is expected that the German influence will be largely felt at the next election of Pope. The Pope has addressed a letter to Cardinal Antonelli, deploring the approaching suppression of the Italian convents, which he denounces as a violation of international law. He declares that a regard for highest interests only prevents his leaving Rome. Reconciliation is impossible, and a conflict between the Holy See and Italian Govern* is inevitable. The Pope cannot submit to such usurpations and requests Antonelli to protest against them to the Foreign Powers. A cable telegram, dated June 10th, referring to the boat race between England and America, says the Atalanta crew entered the race to day under most unfavourable circumstances. After the storm ceased the water was rough and lumpy, the tide running very str ng. It was half-past six before the race commenced. The Atalanta crew won the toss and chose the Sui rev side of the river. The English erew got a length a-head during the first two hunclr. d yards, aud soon increased the gap to a length and a half, and though the Americans made desperate efforts to recover their loss and partially succeeded, they soon began to fail, and although they rowed the race out pluckily, the English crew came out easily more than twenty lengths ahead. The time was twenty-ono minutes sixteen seconds, over a course of four miles and two furlongs.

The Spanish steamer Guadaya exploded her boilers at Marseilles. Forty-four passengers and eleven of the crew were killed. The steamer afterwards conflagrated, the fire communicating to the dock. Several hundred bales of cotton were burnt. Marguerite Dixblanc has been sentenced to death for the murder of Madame Kid. The barque Attend, from Bremen, has arrived at Ivew York after one of the most disastrous voyages on record. She had 475 passengers, and no doctor. Small-pox, measles, and scarlet fever broke out during the passage. Twenty children and seven adults died before reaching Sandy Hook, and five more children died since her arrival. The passengers were chiefly Poles. Small-pox is raging in Dublin. By the explosion of a powder-magazine at Oswestry, Shropshire, several persons were killed.
