DUNEDIN,

The polling took place to-day, but excited very little interest beyond the immediate neighborhood of the various booths. At five the result was announced as follows

The following shows the number of votes polled on the occasion of the last four contested elections. On July 22, 1868, there were four candidates, who polled as follows : —Harris, 340; Tumor, 273 ; Birch, 200 ; Millar, 101; total, 914. On April 20, 1869 there were three candidates, who polled ; Birch, 403 ; Driver, 377 ; Grant, 57; total, 837. In 1869 the numbers polled were : Birch, 568 ; Fish, 514 ; Dods, 74 ; Millar, 38; total, 1194, out of 2430 on the roll. In 1870 there were polled Fish, 789; Griffin, 724 } Millar, 54; Reynolds, 28; total, 1595, out of 2497 on the roll. In 1871 the candidates polled :—Fish, 762 ; Thoneraan, 633; Birch, 179; total, 1574.
